AP9 Connections, IK9 Connections De-mystifies Movie Ratings

AP9 Connections, IK9 Connections, an entertainment savings program by Adaptive Marketing LLC®, understands the importance of selecting movies that are appropriate for children. Movie distributors have perfected the art of packaging and promoting movies to very specific target audiences. Then there’s peer pressure among children to see the blockbuster movie of the moment that “everyone else is seeing.” So how’s a parent to know if any given movie is right for their child?

AP9 Connections, IK9 Connections encourages parents to take advantage of the tools around them when deciding which movies are appropriate for their children. To help parents in their decision-making, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) established a voluntary rating system in 1968. Over the years, the MPAA has updated and refined the ratings.

AP9 Connections, IK9 Connections reminds parents review movie ratings

  • G (GENERAL AUDIENCE). The content is appropriate for all ages.

  • PG(PARENTAL GUIDANCE SUGGESTED). It is recommended that parents review the film before their young children see it.

  • PG-13 (PARENTS STRONGLY CAUTIONED). The film may be inappropriate for pre-teens. It may contain scenes of drug use, but rough violence and sexually-oriented nudity are generally absent.

  • R (RESTRICTED-UNDER 17). The film contains some adult material, so it requires accompanying parent or adult guardian (the age can vary in some locations).

  • NC-17 (NO ONE UNDER 17 AND UNDER ADMITTED). The film is clearly for adults only, although it’s not necessarily obscene or pornographic.

Movie ratings are set by a full-time Rating Board consisting of 8 to 13 members who work for the Classification and Rating Administration. The Classification and Rating Administration is funded by the fees producers and distributors pay for the rating of their films. The Rating Board works independently of the MPAA and cannot be influenced or coerced in the determination of the movie ratings they establish.

Board members do not require special qualifications other than having prior or current parenthood experience so they can view and rate movies that other parents will find appropriate and helpful when making decisions about their children’s movie viewing experiences.

AP9 Connections, IK9 Connections encourages parents to do their homework

While the movie rating system is an excellent starting point for parents’ decisionmaking process, it should be just that — a starting point. AP9 Connections, IK9 Connections encourages parents to learn as much as possible about a film before permitting their child to view it. Reading articles, synopses and reviews will give you a better feel for the content. You can also solicit feedback from others who have already seen the movie.

Determining what’s right for your child to view is a very personal family decision that involves your own values and beliefs. Should you decide that a film isn’t appropriate for your child, take the opportunity to have a candid discussion about why you don’t feel it’s appropriate. And above all else, stick to your beliefs. It’s far more difficult to do the unpopular thing — veto a movie — than to cave to peer pressure. But the long-term rewards can be priceless.
